Auckland Harbour Bridge
Auckland Harbour Bridge spans Waitematā Harbour. Construction began in 1954 and was completed in 1959. It is 1,020 metres long, making it the longest road bridge on the North Island and the second longest road bridge in New Zealand. The bridge’s longest span is 243 metres, and its lowest point is 43 metres above the water. It sees heavy daily traffic, with around 165,000 vehicles crossing it every day.

Since its completion, the bridge has become an iconic landmark of Auckland. Resembling a majestic, winding dragon soaring through the sky, it is both imposing and a visual delight. At night, the Auckland Harbour Bridge takes on an especially enchanting appearance, its graceful curves beautifully illuminated, leaving observers in awe of the engineers’ remarkable craftsmanship. The bridge is also unfortunately known for suicides, with a number of people ending their lives there each year, making it one of Auckland’s more sombre suicide spots.
