Qinglong Grand Waterfall

Qinglong Grand Waterfall
The Wuyi Mountain Qinglong Grand Waterfall is located upstream of the Jiuqu Stream in Wuyi Mountain — around the Wuyi Mountain National Nature Reserve. The scenic trail of the Qinglong Grand Waterfall area stretches 2,300 meters. Situated in a fault zone, the terrain is rugged, and the forest community is nearly pristine. Lush green waves surge year-round, full of vitality. Along the canyon trails, there are over 100 kinds of rare ornamental tree species marked with signs. These uniquely shaped and spectacular rare and precious plants complement the flowing springs and cascading waterfalls in the canyon. Being here feels like stepping into a fairyland or a hidden paradise.

It has been measured that the Qinglong Grand Waterfall and its surrounding areas have the highest concentration of negative oxygen ions in the air in Wuyi Mountain, averaging 67,000 per cubic centimeter, with peaks reaching 136,000 and 112,000 per cubic centimeter respectively — truly a natural oxygen bar.

The nationally rare Qinglong Grand Waterfall is located on the western side of the Wuyi Mountain Grand Canyon Ecological Park, 30 kilometers from the main scenic area and 2 kilometers from the Grand Canyon Eco Rafting Dock. Dense forests surround the waterfall, and water resources are abundant. On the steep cliffs of the deep valley, a grand waterfall cascades down into the abyss, stretching over 200 meters in length with a drop of more than 120 meters and a maximum width of over 40 meters. When you arrive at the Qinglong Grand Waterfall scenic area, you can truly feel the irresistible charm of nature. The surging “Tongtian River” water resembles a silver dragon roaring out from the canyon, with waterfalls plunging into one deep pool after another. The torrents surge forward with momentum, thundering and roaring, waves churning, and droplets splashing, creating rumbling echoes. From a hundred meters away, misty water vapor drifts in the distance, resembling a white silk hanging in the sky, a silver dragon dancing, before swirling through the red cliff canyon and finally converging into the Tongmu Stream.

As the saying goes, “The benevolent enjoy mountains, the wise enjoy water.” Tongtian Grand Canyon offers both. The first half mainly follows the Tongmu Stream, an upstream tributary of the Jiuqu Stream in Wuyi Mountain. Due to the large elevation drop, some river sections have rapid currents. The water crashes against rocks, producing not only thunderous sounds but also beautiful and spectacular bursts of silver spray. The scenic spot we see now is called Splashing Rocks and Silver Waves, the highlight of Tongtian Grand Canyon. With water splashing and shimmering light dancing on the surface, looking at these white waves can inspire one to recite Su Shi’s verse: “The surging waves vanish, rolling up thousands of heaps of snow.” During spring’s high-water season, the current becomes even more turbulent, with flowers of water splashing across the entire valley, the sound of the waves echoing to the sky, and the momentum even more majestic. In life, people chase fame or profit, often unable to let go of anything, their minds burdened with grime, deceit, and rivalry. Faced with this scene and the thunderous roar of the waves, one feels a sudden enlightenment and cleansing of worldly thoughts. What else in life is there to hold onto?

“Exploring mountains and playing in water” — enjoying water is always mentioned alongside mountain exploration. The water of Qinglong Grand Waterfall and Tongmu Stream is undoubtedly world-class, completely unpolluted. In the gentle sections beneath the waterfall, pools form. The pool we see now is called Jade-Green Haze. The water is emerald green, like natural jade. Legend says it was where fairies bathed. If you’re interested, feel free to take a dip. Besides Jade-Green Haze, the Qinglong Grand Waterfall scenic area also features several other water-play spots such as Cool Dragon’s Saliva. The water isn’t very deep, and safety measures are in place to ensure your enjoyment. However, please note that swimming is strictly prohibited outside designated areas for your safety.

The shrine was used by ancient people to burn incense when entering the mountains. It’s a relic left by predecessors and remains entirely original, with no later alterations during the development of the Qinglong Grand Waterfall scenic area. According to Wuyi Mountain folklore, every mountain has its mountain god. Whether entering the mountains to chop wood, hunt, or gather herbs, one must first burn incense at the entrance to pray for the mountain god’s protection. Especially since the mountain where Tongtian Grand Canyon is located is called Tianzi Mountain, it’s no ordinary place to casually enter. In the past, villagers definitely burned incense before venturing in.

Tongtian Bridge — when there’s a great divide, a bridge is essential to cross it. The Cowherd and Weaver Girl meet via the Magpie Bridge, immortals descend via the Rainbow Bridge, and for us to ascend to the heavens, we naturally need to cross the Tongtian Bridge. Beyond the Tongtian Bridge lies mainly a primeval forest area. Here you’ll see lithophytic plant communities, liana plant communities, and a grove of Nageia — such a large cluster of Nageia trees is rarely seen, as they are often found as single trees or scattered.

The Qinglong Grand Waterfall is 120 meters high and 40 meters wide, with three levels arranged in a stepped formation. The waterfall surges from the cliff top as if falling from the sky, easily bringing to mind Li Bai’s verse: “Its torrent dashes down three thousand feet from high / As if the Silver River fell from the blue sky.” The waterfall is majestic, like a thousand troops charging into the deep valley. Where the water flows, droplets splash and thunder roars. The water hitting the pool surface creates splashes like thousands of blooming snow lotuses — a spectacular sight.
