The Jingyang Gorge Scenic Area is located in Jingyang Town, Jianshi County, Enshi. It is known as the “Qingjiang Gallery” due to its spectacular gorge landscape. The Qingjiang River runs through the entire area, with steep cliffs on both sides of the gorge and an iron suspension bridge spanning north to south. On the north bank, there are attractions such as Phoenix Spreading Its Wings, Stone Figure in the Mist, Cliff Path, Jingyang Pass, and Jingyang Hot Springs. On the south bank, you can find Wuhua Evening Haze, Xinglong Ancient Temple, Twin Rocks Holding Up the Sky, Longwan Waterfall, Tusi Fortress, Shuangtudi, General Rock, and Tidong Cave.
Jingyang Pass stands firmly between towering cliffs at an altitude of 1,080 meters, exuding an imposing aura of “one man guarding the pass can hold off ten thousand.” It served as a vital route for Sichuan salt to enter Hunan in ancient times and was also a strategic military stronghold to defend against invasions from outside tribes, making it a fiercely contested site throughout history. Below the pass lies the Qingjiang River. Following a winding mountain path down from the pass, it is about 7.5 kilometers to the ancient river ferry.
Wuhua Evening Haze: At the summit of Wuhua Village on the south bank rise five peaks shaped like a blooming plum blossom. At dusk, when the glow of the setting sun shines upon them, the peaks present a dazzling array of colors, creating a magnificent and fairy-tale-like scene.
Xinglong Ancient Temple is located at the foot of Qinglong Mountain, surrounded by towering ancient trees and entwined vines. This temple was originally built by a successful candidate in the imperial provincial examinations during the Qing Dynasty and was initially called Qinglong Temple. Later, to commemorate the scholar and to promote cultural prosperity in the region, it was renamed Xinglong Temple. The Tusi Fortress is said to have been the last stronghold of the Rongmei Tusi. Ancient Ba bronze artifacts, such as bronze drums with double tiger buttons, have been unearthed here. During the Second Revolutionary Civil War period, proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation, including Guan Xiangying, were active in Yangjia Street in the Xiaodong management area of Jingyang Town. After the completion of the Qingjiang Shuibuya Hydropower Project, visitors can take small steamships along the Qingjiang River all the way to the Yangtze River.
Food/Accommodation/Shopping: Jingyang Chicken, also known as Jingyang Nine-Jin Chicken or Jingyang Black-Bone Chicken, is a rare and unique resource cultivated under the special climate conditions of Jingyang Town. It is pollution-free, has delicious and tender meat, and offers nourishing benefits—making it an absolutely delicious dish worth trying. It can be found in some restaurants in Jingyang Town. Additionally, if you are traveling to Jingyang Town by chartered car, you can also stay overnight in the town. Transportation: Located downstream of the Qingjiang River, the area is not very easily accessible. Currently, the most ideal route is to first take a chartered car from Enshi to Jingyang Town, which costs around 300 yuan, and then contact a local boatman in Jingyang Town to take a boat tour. Alternatively, you can first go to Sandouya High Dam in Badong, and then take an upstream boat tour of Jingyang Gorge. You may also join a locally organized one-day canyon tour group.
