The most eye-catching landmark on the square is the red sandstone pyramid located at its center. This pyramid is possibly one of the most unusual tombs in history. In 1825, Karl Wilhelm, the Margrave and founder of Karlsruhe, was laid to rest here. The stone sarcophagus containing Karl Wilhelm’s ashes is housed inside the pyramid, but it is not open to the public.
On the west side of Karlsruhe Market Square stands the Karlsruhe City Hall, while the Evangelical Church is located on the east side. The square is surrounded by numerous cafés and restaurants. A wide variety of events—such as markets, entertainment shows, and other activities, including street performers—are held here almost daily. Strolling through the square offers you an up-close glimpse into the real daily life of Karlsruhe.
