Shimen River Scenic Area
The Shimen River Tourist Area is situated in Gaoping Town, Jianshi County, Hubei Province, along a tributary of the 800-li Qingjiang River. With a total investment of 350 million yuan, the area boasts typical karst landform characteristics, combining elements of “seclusion, danger, wonder, beauty, and antiquity.” It includes human origin sites, the ancient “Bashan Salt Road”—the oldest in southern China—one of the birthplaces of the ancient Ba people, and a settlement area of the Tujia ethnic group. The Shimen River Tourist Area encompasses the Gaoping Tourist Reception Center (which includes a self-drive tourism campsite), the Shimen River Exploration and Bridge-Viewing Corridor, the Gigantopithecus Cave Historical and Nostalgic Tourist Zone, the Shizhu Temple Taoist Health and Leisure Area, and the Bajiao Village Agricultural Leisure Resort Area, covering a total area of approximately 180 square kilometers. Known as the “Foremost Scenic Wonder of Southern Shi,” the Shimen Pass features perilous yet picturesque landscapes and serves as an important link between the tourist attractions of Chongqing and Yichang.

The Shimen Ancient Style Tourist Area spans approximately 180 square kilometers and boasts abundant and distinctive natural and cultural tourism resources. The area’s tourism resources can be mainly divided into five categories: geomorphological landscapes, water scenery, biological landscapes, heritage sites, and regional culture.

The Shimen River Scenic Area is located in Gaoping, Jianshi, Hubei, connecting to Henan and Shaanxi to the north, bordering Bashu to the west, facing Jianghan to the east, reaching southern Hunan to the south, and lying adjacent to both Chongqing and Wuhan, as well as near the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. The Yiwan Railway and the Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway run across the region, while National Highways 318 and 209 pass through the scenic area. It is just one hour’s drive from the airport and train stations.
