The bridge served as the dividing line between West Berlin and East Germany—the end of West Berlin and the beginning of East Germany. Starting in 1952, a pass was required to cross this former “Bridge of Unity.” Before November 18, 1989, it functioned as a border checkpoint between East and West Germany. On February 11, 1986, the bridge gained global attention due to a sensational spy exchange incident. After the historic turning point, a memorial was erected on the bridge, and on November 10, 1999, the bronze sculpture “Nike 89” was unveiled in a grand ceremony to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Situated between Berlin and Potsdam, Glienicke Bridge offers visitors a unique vantage point over the Havel River. Strolling through the lush woods nearby, you may occasionally spot castles, churches, or pavilions dotting the landscape.
