The museum focuses on showcasing one of Germany’s most significant private collections of paintings, with an emphasis on works ranging from late Rococo to Classicism and Romanticism, and on to Impressionism. Schäfer’s collection includes 160 paintings and 110 drawings by Spitzweg, as well as works by Caspar David Friedrich, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Albrecht Adam, Fritz von Uhde, Wilhelm Leibl, Adolf Menzel, Franz von Lenbach and Hans Thoma, and even pieces by Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt, and Max Beckmann.
The building of the Museum Georg Schäfer itself is one of the important works of contemporary museum architecture. As one critic put it, “its strong carvings, angles and edges, ramps and terraces are particularly striking,” resembling a jewel box filled with priceless treasures.
