As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centre of Lübeck,” the museum opened in 1915 and is renowned for its collection of medieval religious art. It boasts Germany’s most extensive collection of polyptychs, many of which were donated by churches. In addition to polyptychs, the museum displays numerous Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, remarkably lifelike and highly admired. Its special collections include religious items such as chalices, cups, and jugs, along with a wide variety of liturgical vestments. Another major highlight is the museum’s photo collection, comprising around 450 images that vividly illustrate the history of photography.
