The Catete Palace is an important stage in Brazilian political history. It was commissioned by António Clemente Pinto, a Portuguese baron who moved to Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century. In addition to black slaves, engineers, architects, and painters from various countries also participated in the construction of this mansion.
The Catete Palace took 10 years to build and was fully completed in 1866. It was purchased by 0 in 1896. A year later, after renovation, the Catete Palace became the administrative building of the Republic, serving in that capacity until Brasília was built.
Until the completion of Brasília and the relocation of the capital from Rio de Janeiro to the new city, the Catete Palace remained the official residence of successive presidents of the Republic. In 1960, it became the Republic Museum and was designated as a national historical monument under protection.
