Diamantina, a colonial village nestled like a gem in the barren rocky mountains, is an illustration of 18th-century diamond mining adventures and proof that human culture and art can triumph over harsh environments. The shaman Piralakusu of the Puri tribe set fire to the sacred tree felled by white invaders, perishing in the flames along with his people, while hundreds of indigenous bodies lay around the huge bonfire. Fueled by hatred, Piralakusu cursed the new settlers by the Jequitinhonha River at the foot of the Itabira Mountains.
