The Historic Center of São Luís is situated on São Luís Island, about 2.5 kilometers south of the equator along the Atlantic coast, and is surrounded by São Marcos Bay. It lies roughly 3,000 kilometers north of Brazil’s largest port, Rio de Janeiro. Established in 1612, the city has a population of 780,000 and serves as the capital of Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil. In 1997, São Luís was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Historic Center of São Luís has a tropical climate with high humidity. Average daytime temperatures range from a maximum of 30°C to a minimum of 25°C. The rainy season occurs from March to April, while February and March offer plenty of sunshine, making them ideal travel months with average daily temperatures between 30–35°C. Nighttime temperatures drop to around 25–27°C, though the high humidity can make it feel warmer. The Atlantic humidity often brings the heat index to around 31°C. São Luís is not only a historical hub but also blessed by nature with stunningly beautiful beaches.
