The Doba Lighthouse was built in 1536 and is situated within the Fort of Santo Antônio da Barra. The Fort of Santo Antônio da Barra is Brazil’s first fortress, located on the northern stretch of All Saints Bay. The fortress was constructed to defend the coastal area from enemies and pirates during the 16th and 17th centuries. In its initial decades, the fort was essentially just a simple defensive trench; it was only after the French invasion of the colony in the 17th century that the Portuguese expanded the fortifications. Today, the fort has taken on a star-shaped form.
Inside the Fort of Santo Antônio da Barra, there is a Maritime Museum that houses maps, nautical instruments, models of old ships, items salvaged from shipwrecks along the coast, as well as equipment used by modern sailors. There is also a café on the premises where visitors can take a break and enjoy the ocean view. The beach near the Doba Lighthouse features rough waves, making it suitable for surfing. Adjacent to it, the Barra Beach has calmer and clearer waters. Between Barra Beach and the lighthouse, there is a cluster of bars, restaurants, and food stalls offering a variety of local Bahian delicacies.
