The National Gallery of Zimbabwe is situated in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, and is committed to exhibiting and preserving the nation’s contemporary artworks and visual cultural heritage. The original “National Gallery of Rhodesia” was designed and directed by Frank McEwen, and the prominence of Shona stone sculpture is credited to a British individual. The gallery officially opened on July 16, 1957, with a visit from Queen Elizabeth and her mother, and Queen Elizabeth II attended the 6th Zimbabwe Heritage Exhibition in October 1991.

In 2007, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe celebrated its 50th anniversary. The current Managing Director is Doreen Sibanda, the Director is Raphael Chikukwa, and the board includes Dominic Benhura, a renowned Zimbabwean sculptor. The National Gallery in Bulawayo and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Mutare are both branch galleries of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
