Rockefeller Center
Guide In New York, one naturally thinks of the financier John D. Rockefeller Jr. In the late 1920s, despite the economic depression that loomed over North and South America, he decided to realize his long-cherished vision: to build a complex of buildings in the heart of Manhattan that would become a premier entertainment hub. Highlights From October to April, the plaza becomes an ice-skating rink; during warmer months, it transforms into a summer garden, at the center of which stands an 18-foot-tall bronze statue of Prometheus with golden petals atop its head — rivaling the city’s most beautiful sculptures. Of course, the most prominent feature of the complex is the 70-story Rockefeller Plaza skyscraper. This building complex lies between 5th and 6th Avenues, stretching from 47th to 51st Streets. The entertainment center's Radio City Music Hall hosts world-class artists. NBC and its television network programs are broadcast from studios here. Introduction Rockefeller Center is a complex of nineteen buildings covering twenty-two acres (89,029.6 square meters). It is home to many national TV broadcasting bases and the headquarters of numerous international companies. Underground shops and restaurants connect the various buildings. The lower plaza is a striking urban oasis, flying the 159 colorful flags of the United Nations. Flower beds line the sidewalks between the plaza and 5th Avenue.
