Formed after the construction of the Akosombo Dam in 1967, Lake Volta is 900 kilometers long, up to 24 kilometers wide, with an average depth of 18.8 meters and a maximum depth of 75 meters. It is one of Africa’s premier freshwater fishing grounds, yielding over 40,000 tons of fish annually—about a quarter of Ghana’s total marine catch. The vastness of Lake Volta is breathtaking, and its endless waters are characterized by fishing boats that appear and disappear on the horizon. Small wooden boats dot the surface; at first glance they are there, but in the blink of an eye, they’re gone.
The scenery around Lake Volta is beautiful, surrounded by lush green forests and vibrant flowers, so the lake never feels lonely. The emerald-green woods, azure waters, and scattered boats create a stunning view that makes visitors reluctant to leave.
