Black Star Square
Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, is a public square in Accra. The square faces north and covers a large area. In 1471, Ghana began to fall under the colonial rule of European powers. On March 6, 1957, Ghana officially declared independence, and on July 1, 1960, the Republic of Ghana was formally established. Black Star Square was built to commemorate Ghana’s independence.

Upon entering Black Star Square, the first thing you see is an arc formed by Ghanaian flagpoles—an impressive sight. Next, you’ll find the Independence Arch and the Unknown Soldier’s Monument, which symbolize Ghana’s independence. The Independence Arch resembles the Arc de Triomphe, with a black five-pointed star atop it. In front of the Unknown Soldier’s Monument is a red brazier, which is lit during commemorative ceremonies. There is also a uniquely shaped yellow arch structure with three levels; the podium is located on the third level and supported by three curved arch pillars, giving it a distinctive architectural style. Behind it lies the vast ocean, making the view from the podium both majestic and awe-inspiring.

Black Star Square is a venue for important events. During national holidays or military parades, it becomes a sea of people and is extremely lively. Even on regular days, many visitors come here. It has also become a public square where residents of Accra relax and gather.
