The Shai Hills Resource Reserve was created to protect the wildlife in the region. The area enjoys a climate highly favorable to the growth of flora and fauna, providing ideal conditions for their reproduction and habitation. Currently, the reserve is home to 175 species of birds, 31 species of mammals, and 13 species of reptiles. Mammals include African buffalo, duikers, bushbucks, civets, olive baboons, green monkeys, and patas monkeys. The reserve boasts lush forests and flowing streams, where animals coexist harmoniously.
Before entering the reserve, visitors can buy some bananas to feed the monkeys. The monkeys here are very tame and interact well with people. Interested visitors can also hike to the hilltops to enjoy panoramic views of the reserve’s natural landscape.
