The theatre was completed and put into use by the end of 1992. It is an iconic landmark in Ghana, and its unique and aesthetically pleasing architectural design has made it a symbol of Accra’s cityscape. The National Theatre of Ghana includes an auditorium, a sturdy and beautifully designed stage area and rehearsal halls, VIP reception rooms, fountains, and more. For over a decade, the theatre has played a significant role in enhancing cultural and artistic exchanges between the people of China and Ghana, as well as enriching the cultural and artistic life of the Ghanaian people.
Over time, some of the theatre’s facilities and functions could no longer meet new demands. In response to a request from the Ghanaian side, the Chinese government began renovating the theatre in March 2005 through grant aid, further upgrading its functionality.
