Hainan West Coast Haiwei Wetland Park is situated in the Shigangtang wetland area of Haiwei Town, within Changjiang Li Autonomous County in the western part of Hainan Province. The park covers an area of 4,448 mu, featuring flat terrain and coastal sandy landforms. There are no major rivers in the region, and surface water mainly comes from the Jigoutian Ditch, which can gather rainwater from dozens of square kilometers in the surrounding area during the rainy season. Due to its proximity to the sea, groundwater is extremely abundant.
Through field surveys, indoor classification, identification, analysis, and statistics, 255 species of vascular plants belonging to 79 families have been recorded in the area. The vegetation consists of both natural and artificial types, including aquatic lotus, eucalyptus forests, casuarina, shrubbery, and aquatic vegetation. Animal types include rice frogs, marsh frogs, decorated wart frogs, and flower wart frogs. Reptiles such as water snakes and freshwater turtles are also present; there are 69 species of birds from 36 families across 14 orders, including ring-necked plovers (héng), ospreys, sandpipers, red knots (yù), and black-winged stilts (jí
líng). The main species include brown-winged cuckoos, spotted doves, little swifts, little egrets, cattle egrets, pond herons, brown shrikes, and dark-eyed white-eyes. Ducks, rails, shorebirds (héng), and herons are among the most distinctive bird species in the area.
The wetlands include marsh wetlands and coastal wetlands, with a vegetation coverage of ≥30%. It is one of the better-preserved and relatively rare inland freshwater marsh wetlands in Hainan. The area boasts rich tourism resources, making it an ideal destination for eco-tourism, sightseeing, leisure, and science education.
In recent years, with strong support from the Changjiang County Party Committee and County Government, Hainan West Coast Haiwei Wetland Park has achieved further development and now has basic reception capabilities. Many tourists visit, eager to witness the beauty of nature, and many find themselves lingering and reluctant to leave.
