As early as 1908, after diamonds were discovered in German South West Africa, a diamond rush swept through Lüderitz, drawing a wave of young dreamers to the Namibian desert. Soon after, the small settlement of Kolmanskop rapidly developed into a typical German-style town, complete with schools, hospitals, entertainment venues, and large residential areas. It was the first town in Africa to have a tram system, and the Southern Hemisphere’s first X-ray machine was also operated here.
However, the good times didn’t last. With the rise of the Oranjemund mining area and a significant drop in diamond prices after World War I, this once-thriving town gradually declined. In 1956, the last residents left, leaving Kolmanskop completely abandoned and swallowed by sand dunes, turning it into a true ghost town.
