For thousands of years, the simple and unique ethnic customs have made the social landscape of this island rich and colorful. Among them, the most distinctive are the lifestyle and customs of the Li people. The Li are the indigenous people of Hainan, who have lived for generations in the central Wuzhishan Mountain area and the southwestern part of Hainan Island, with a current population of over 1.3 million. The Li language belongs to the Li branch of the Zhuang-Dong language group within the Sino-Tibetan language family, and its cultural characteristics share close origins with the Zhuang and Buyi ethnic groups in southern China. The Li people are divided into five subgroups: Qi, Hao, Run, Sai, and Meifu. Li villages are mostly located on valley slopes or mountain basins, surrounded by dense trees or thorny bamboo. Traditional Li housing consists of thatched cottages known as "boat-shaped stilt houses." Legend has it that the ancestors of the Li people crossed the sea by boat, so living in boat-shaped houses has been preserved as a tradition. The Li are a musical and dancing people, and during festive occasions, men and women engage in antiphonal singing or sing and dance through the night. The traditional Li festival, known as the "Third Month Third" (Sanyuesan), is celebrated every year according to the lunar calendar, with grand festivities held by the Li people.

The Li people mastered weaving techniques very early on. Huang Daopo, a female textile expert during the Yuan Dynasty, learned advanced cotton-spinning techniques from the Li people. Traditional Li brocade is usually based on black and brown tones, interspersed with green, red, white, blue, yellow, and other colors, featuring patterns of human figures, animals, plants, landscapes, and auspicious symbols. Traditional Li clothing includes men wearing red or black headscarves, open-front tops, and cloth sashes around the waist. Women’s attire varies among the subgroups, but tube skirts are common to all. Hainan Island boasts a rich folk culture, giving rise to many unique folk festivals. On the evening of the 15th day of the first lunar month, the annual and distinctive Flower Exchange Festival is held in Qiongshan City, Hainan. From the 9th to the 19th day of the second lunar month, the Xinqiao Town of Qiongshan City and many other parts of the province hold the four-day "Junpo Festival," a folk worship event commemorating Lady Xian. The Third Month Third (Sanyuesan) is a traditional festival for young Li men and women to pursue love and happiness. Both the Li and Miao ethnic groups in Hainan celebrate the "Third Month Third." Every year in late March or early April (during the Third Month Third), the Hainan International Coconut Festival is held. It is a large-scale tourism and cultural festival integrating travel, culture, folklore, sports, and trade. The annual Mid-Autumn Festival marks the Danzhou Folk Song Festival, featuring main activities such as Danzhou folk mountain songs, antiphonal singing competitions, and moon viewing. The "Hainan Happiness Festival" is held every year in late November.
