Mazagan Portuguese City

The Mazagan military fortress, situated 90 kilometers southwest of Casablanca, was an early 16th-century Portuguese colonial settlement on the Atlantic coast and now forms part of the city of El Jadida. The fortifications, along with their walls and bastions, showcase early Renaissance military design. Surviving Portuguese-style structures include the water tower and the Church of the Assumption, which features Manueline architecture with late Gothic influences.

The Portuguese City is one of the earliest colonies established by Portuguese explorers on their way to India in western Africa. It stands as an example of cultural interaction, exchange, and blending between European and Moroccan influences, perfectly reflected in its architecture, technology, and urban planning. Surrounded by thick city walls, the Portuguese City originally had four bastions, with the moat extending only between the first and fourth bastions. Remaining structures of the Portuguese City include the 16th-century Church of the Assumption in the Manueline style, as well as defensive works such as the castle and watchtowers.
