The medina of Fes
Fes was founded in the 9th century and flourished in the 14th and 17th centuries. After 1912, when the French rulers relocated the capital to Rabat, its political significance gradually declined. However, it continues to play an important role in religious faith and cultural exchange, thanks to the two renowned mosques in the heart of the medina — the University of Al Quaraouiyine Mosque and the Andalusian Mosque. It remains one of the most beautiful such districts in the world today.

Rows of grayish-brown and pale-yellow houses stretch up the gentle slopes from both banks of the Oued Fes, interspersed with over 300 minarets. This place embodies not only natural beauty but also the extraordinary wisdom and astonishing wealth of humankind. The mystery of Fes lies in its old city, the medina, a 9th-century ancient city. With its narrow streets, winding alleys, elegant fountains in tranquil courtyards, traditional houses, and bustling souks, the medina presents a world unlike any other.

The medina of Fes is the best-preserved ancient urban area in the Arab world, encircled by 12 kilometers of city walls adorned with battlements and several grand gateways. The gates are inlaid with turquoise, and once you pass through them, it feels as if you’ve stepped back into the Middle Ages.
