The Archaeological Site of Volubilis
The Archaeological Site of Volubilis is located about 30 kilometers north of Meknes, where well-preserved triumphal arches and white stone columns of an ancient theater remain. Even the streets, residential houses, oil mills, public baths, and markets of the ancient city are still clearly visible. There are also many mosaic murals, and a large number of exquisitely crafted bronze statues and marble busts have been excavated from the ruins.

Volubilis is an ancient Roman ruin with a long history. In the 1st century AD, the Romans established a settlement on what was likely a former Carthaginian city, which became Volubilis, and it gradually developed into one of the central administrative cities of the Roman Empire in Africa. The main part of Volubilis—and the only area that attracts visitors from Morocco and abroad—is an area of just 800×600 meters. Many of the finest unearthed artifacts have been moved to the Archaeological Museum near the Royal Palace in Rabat. However, the ruins of Volubilis remain highly valuable, with around 30 mosaics still standing in their original locations.
