Yellow River Longmen Ancient Ferry Scenic Area

The Yellow River Longmen Ferry is located near the famous Hukou Waterfall, on the banks of the Yellow River about 12 kilometers northwest of Hejin City, Yuncheng. The river is flanked by mountains to the east and west, with steep cliffs along the shore. The surging Yellow River narrows abruptly at this point, with the channel between the two banks measuring just over eighty meters in width. Longmen was historically known as "Yu Gate" (Gate of the Yu the Great), and because it lies along a vital transportation route, the mouth of the Longmen is also called "Yu Mouth." It was once praised as “Three tiers of waves at Yu Gate, a thunderclap on level ground.”

The Yellow River flows from north to south, rushing down through the canyon, with mountains to the east and west standing opposite each other like towering cliffs, forming the shape of a gate. Local legend says that every spring, during the third lunar month, carp from rivers, lakes, and seas swim upstream in the thousands, leaping forward and jumping through the river gate. Those that succeed are said to transform into dragons. The spot where the carp leap is thus called “Dragon Gate.”
