The reserve preserves large areas of well-maintained primary broadleaf forests, including over 30 species of national first- and second-class protected plants such as Bole tree, fragrant fruit tree, and ginkgo. It is also home to a multitude of rare wild protected animals living here in peace, among which there are as many as 16 species of national first- and second-class protected animals represented by the clouded leopard.
The reserve enjoys a pleasant climate year-round, featuring rugged rocks, precipitous waterfalls, dense forests, and a stunning variety of exotic flowers and plants. Meanwhile, the relatively isolated living environment has allowed local mountain villagers to retain the simple and unadorned lifestyle of the Tujia people, with stilted houses, small bamboo baskets, and villagers dressed in traditional Tujia attire commonly seen throughout the area.
