The museum houses 20 exhibition halls introducing the century-long development of Chinese cinema and a film technology expo. There are also temporary exhibition halls, a lecture hall, and a multi-functional hall. The venue includes an IMAX theater, a digital cinema, and three 35mm film screening rooms.
Designed through a collaboration between American RTKL International and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, the architectural design of China Film Museum reflects a balance between cinematic art and architectural language. It not only delivers a dynamic visual impact but also immerses visitors in the experience of being part of a film, elevating strong visual effects into a comprehensive, multi-dimensional encounter.
The external appearance of China Film Museum is not only majestic but also rich in unique artistic character. In front of the main building, a giant screen and a staggered diagonal wall on the square form a planar composition resembling a clapperboard. The building uses black as its base color, with perforated metal panels serving as exterior decoration, cloaking this temple of light and shadow in an air of mystery. Against the unified, neutral black backdrop, the four facades feature large areas of colored glass, corresponding to the positions of the building’s internal public spaces. The colors red, green, blue, and yellow represent the four functional zones: exhibitions, expos, cinemas, and comprehensive services—each radiating a vibrant personality.
The interior of China Film Museum is based on a color scheme of black, white, and gray, elegant and serene. All other colors appear even more vivid against this neutral palette: giant colored glass windows cast colorful hues under natural light; the circular walls of the central rotunda continuously shift in color, displaying dazzling brilliance; and the decorative lighting inside the elevators dazzles, offering visitors delightful visual surprises throughout their tour.
Covering an area of 65 acres, China Film Museum has a construction area of nearly 38,000 square meters and an exhibition line stretching 2,970 meters. It features content related to over 1,500 films, more than 4,300 images, and profiles of over 450 filmmakers. The exhibitions and expos at China Film Museum were meticulously produced by a large group of top-tier experts and scholars in China’s film industry, organized by the state. They combine authority, knowledge, and artistry.
