The Water Viewing Platform
The Water Viewing Platform is located at the southern end of the Western-style Buildings in the Old Summer Palace, specifically at the Yuanmingyuan Xiyanglou YuanYaiguan. It was where Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty would watch the water fountains. The area includes the pedestal for the emperor’s throne, the stone-carved screen behind the throne, as well as Baroque-style stone gates on both sides. In the tenth year of the Xianfeng reign (1860), it was destroyed by the Anglo-French allied forces. After the second year of the Xuantong reign (1910), the remaining carved floral core of the stone screen was transported by Zaitao to the Langrun Garden. It was returned to its original location in 1977.
