Zhongguancun Square, originally named Zhongguancun West District, was a major initiative of the national strategy to revitalize the country through science and education. It was an important decision by the Beijing Municipal Government to adjust the industrial structure, vigorously develop the knowledge economy and high-tech industries, and shape the image of the capital as a modern international metropolis in the 21st century. In June 1999, the State Council approved the request from the Beijing Municipal Government and the Ministry of Science and Technology regarding the construction of Zhongguancun Science Park, deciding to build Zhongguancun into a high-tech park with beautiful surroundings, complete facilities, convenient transportation, and smooth information flow within about ten years.

The construction of Zhongguancun Square officially commenced on June 20, 2000. As the high-tech business center district of Zhongguancun, Zhongguancun Square will focus on financial information, scientific research and development, business trade, administrative offices, and technology exhibitions. It will also be equipped with public supporting facilities such as commerce, hotels, catering, apartments, culture, health and fitness, entertainment, and large green spaces, providing a comprehensive public service platform for the development of high-tech enterprises.

Zhongguancun Square is located in Haidian Town, Haidian District, bordered by Zhongguancun Street to the east, Caihefang Road to the west, the North Fourth Ring Road to the north, and Haidian Town South Street to the south. It offers distant views of the Summer Palace, the Old Summer Palace, and the scenic spots of Beijing's Western Hills, while being close to renowned academic institutions and research centers such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It lies in the core area of Zhongguancun, which boasts both profound historical culture and a strong research atmosphere.
