The Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium was originally used for daily teaching purposes at the university, while also meeting the needs of hosting international competitions. To meet the requirements of the Olympic Organizing Committee, on the basis of retaining the original structure and functional layout, the school, in collaboration with relevant units, re-planned the main gymnasium by adding various barrier-free facilities and renovating the power supply system. Additionally, a temporary warm-up hall covering 750 square meters, as well as spectator rooms, logistics service rooms, and security rooms, were constructed on the West Practice Field. At the same time, the improvement of the surrounding campus environment was also one of the main components of the renovation project.

After the renovation, the total floor area of the gymnasium reached 21,900 square meters, with nearly 4,600 seats. During the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics, it successively served as the venue for volleyball preliminaries and goalball competitions. From September 13 to September 16 this year, the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 International Goalball Invitational Tournament will be held here, marking the first test event and venue for the Paralympics.

Zhao Xianli, Vice President of Beijing Institute of Technology, stated that the grand and imposing exterior, along with the meticulous and rational interior structure, has made the gymnasium an iconic building of the university. It is reported that after the Paralympics, all the temporarily built structures around the gymnasium will be dismantled, and it will once again become the main venue for the university’s sports teaching, large-scale academic lectures, presentations, and job fairs.
