Shanghai Xiangyang Park
Xiangyang Park is bordered by Huaihai Middle Road to the south, Xiangyang North Road to the west, and Xinle Road to the north, covering an area of 22,066 square meters. The original site was farmland and a cemetery, including the burial ground of Xue Baocheng, a wealthy Jiangyin dye merchant. In 1938, the French Concession authorities purchased the land as a site for a new office building. In June 1940, after the French government surrendered to Germany, the construction of the office building was put on hold. In 1941, the Municipal Council decided to build a park exclusively for French children, which was briefly known as Children's Park. Due to protests from Chinese residents, it opened to the public on January 30, 1942. To commemorate the former French diplomat Rainville, who died in the anti-German war in 1939, it was named Rainville Park, also known as Dumei Park. In 1943, it was renamed Taishan Park, and after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, it was changed to Lin Sen Park in 1946. On May 28, 1950, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government approved its renaming to Xiangyang Park.

The park features both formal layouts and natural arrangements, making use of hedges to divide spaces and create an effect of seeing vastness within a small area. It includes tree-lined avenues of French plane trees, symmetrical flower beds, wide paths, winding trails, uniquely angled entrances and pathways, along with exquisitely arranged greenery, forming a distinctive French-style park. The park is planted with nearly 100 species of flowers and trees such as cherry blossoms, camellias, azaleas, crabapple, and roses, enhancing the seasonal scenery.
