Zhaizilun

Zhaizilun
Zhaizilun is situated 15 kilometers south of Yiyang City, straddling the boundary between Xielinggang and Shisun townships. The mountain range is composed of three main peaks: Shenlong Peak, Fengxing Mountain, and Motian Ridge, with the highest summit reaching an elevation of 354 meters.

The name “Zhaizilun” (literally “Stockade Mountain”) originates from its steep and strategic terrain, which has made it a historically crucial military stronghold suitable for both offense and defense. During the Southern Song Dynasty, Yue Fei’s vanguard commander Niu Gao once stationed his troops here to block the advance of the peasant rebel army led by Yang Yao, successfully defending Yiyang. Over the centuries, numerous peasant leaders and outlaws have also set up camps and raised flags on the mountain to resist oppressive government forces and fend off pursuing troops. During the Anti-Japanese War, as Japanese forces invaded southern China and advanced toward Yiyang, Chinese troops built fortifications and dug trenches on Zhaizilun to resist the invasion. A popular rhyme from that time goes: “Zhaizilun is really high, perfect for placing big cannons on the mount, shells raining down on the devils’ crowd, scaring the devils into howls.” This vividly illustrates the mountain’s tactical importance. The ancient military barriers and modern-era trenches still leave visible traces on the mountain today.

What was once an ancient battleground contested by warring armies is now being gradually developed into a tourist destination. The scenic area boasts over 40 potential attractions, some of which are already open to visitors.

Observation Deck. Situated at the highest point of Shenlong Peak, the deck offers panoramic views where surrounding mountains resemble galloping steeds and countless peaks emerge like bamboo shoots after rain, creating a majestic and layered mountain panorama.

Motian Peak. At its summit lies an immortal’s gathering terrace and a heavenly pool for bathing. To the south, there are bamboo forests providing shade, where water and sky blend into one. The “One-Line Sky” crevice stretches 50 meters long and 2 meters wide, flanked by cliffs over 10 meters high, offering a serene yet perilous mountain path. There is also a waterfall cliff where mountain springs cascade down dozens of meters of steep rock face, resembling a white silk ribbon splashing into the valley—a spectacular sight.

Fengxing Mountain. Shaped like a phoenix flying to meet the dragon (Shenlong Peak), together they form a “Dragon and Phoenix in Harmony” landscape.
