Qasr Amra
Introduction Qasr Amra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the most splendid of the desert castles in eastern Jordan, built in the early 8th century. Serving as a caliphal retreat, Qasr Amra was not only fortified for defense but also featured lush, vibrant gardens irrigated by water drawn from 15 meters underground. Despite being located in the heart of the desert, its inhabitants led a leisurely and refined lifestyle akin to that of European nobility. The interior of Qasr Amra still preserves a wealth of exquisitely detailed frescoes, depicting figures and animals such as triumphant warriors, embracing lovers, and lions chasing white horses—scenes rarely seen in Arabic art. Transportation Located 90 kilometers east of Amman.
