Hua Zhou Drum Tower
Hua Zhou Drum Tower, also known as Qiao Tower, is situated in front of the government compound of Hua Zhou County. Historically, it was the main gate of both the prefectural and county governments and now serves as the main entrance to the county government and the county Party committee. The tower got its name because the central hall on the upper floor once housed a clock, drums, and books for recreational purposes. It was built in the 27th year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1548). In the 2nd year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1663), it underwent comprehensive renovation and facade expansion; further repairs were made in the 12th year of the Qianlong reign (1747), and again in the 26th year of the Republic of China (1937). After a fundraising renovation in the spring of 1986, the tower stands 13.1 meters tall, is 11.4 meters long, and 16.3 meters wide, covering an area of 186 square meters. Its structure was changed from brick and wood to brick, stone, and concrete. The traditional features of red walls, green tiles, double eaves, and upturned corners have been preserved. The upper level features a four-sided corridor with cloud-patterned stone railings, while the central hall displays commemorative plaques and an honor roll dedicated to individuals and organizations that donated over 100 yuan. The side rooms showcase pictures, newspapers, paintings, photographs, poetry, and couplets. A decorative motif of two dragons playing with a pearl was added to the roof. With its tall structure and wide gate, stone lions are placed on either side of the main entrance. It is a key cultural relic protected at the county level.
