Zhonghuozhang is towering and precipitous. From its summit, one can gaze upon a white ribbon-like river to the east, where water meets sky in the south, vast misty waters to the west, and rolling mountain ranges to the north. This breathtaking natural panorama captivates visitors with its extraordinary charm and moving beauty. The profusely blooming rhodomyrtus is one of the mountain’s most spectacular sights. In late spring, when you look out from the mountaintop, the hillsides are covered with lush rhodomyrtus trees, their branches adorned with vibrant, layered blossoms. Standing amidst them, surrounded by a sea of flowers, feels like stepping into a fairyland. Due to its proximity to the South China Sea, the high elevation, and dense forests, clouds often gather over the mountains. When the sea of clouds forms, wild vapors surge and spread across the sky, momentarily engulfing the green peaks in a misty veil.
The waters of Zhonghuozhang are also stunningly beautiful. The Immortal Pool boasts picturesque scenery, with verdant mountains lining both banks, neat farmland, and well-arranged village houses. In crisp autumn weather, the pool water is crystal clear, with drifting cloud shadows adding to the idyllic rural charm. To the west of the Dragon Pool, there are three ancient banyan trees. The green water in the river shimmers with reflected light, and a gentle breeze rustles through the trees. Resting here offers boundless delight.
During the Liu Song Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties period, the distinguished female politician, military strategist, and renowned tribal leader Xian Ying—hailed as China’s first heroine—dedicated her life to ethnic unity and national unification. To maintain long-term peace and stability in the Lingnan region, she once led her army to Zhonghuozhang to strategize military formations, oppose separatism, suppress rebellions, combat bandits, subdue various Yue tribes, resolve feuds, and pacify the people. Her efforts greatly promoted the economic and cultural development of the Lingnan region. With remarkable military achievements and great contributions to the region, she was appointed by Emperor Xuan of Chen as Middle General and Lady of Shilong, and later honored by Emperor Wen of Sui as the Lady of Qiaoguo.
Historical figures such as Su Zhe, the great literary master of the Song Dynasty, Fan Zuyu, Academician of the Dragon Diagram Pavilion, Yang Yiqing, Chief Grand Secretary of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Jian, a renowned talent of the Lingnan region in the late Ming and early Qing periods, Li Zongren, Acting President of the Republic of China, and others were all deeply enchanted by the natural scenery of Zhonghuozhang. They climbed the mountain for sightseeing, exploration, and discovery, and composed numerous magnificent poems praising its splendor. Legend has it that in the 1970s, a former Vice Chairman of the Central Committee and military strategist secretly flew to Zhonghuozhang to survey the terrain. Since then, the fame of Zhonghuozhang has spread far and wide.
Zhonghuozhang is blessed with extraordinary natural beauty, majestic landscapes, numerous scenic spots, unique attractions, abundant resources, rich culture, vibrant local customs, simple and sincere folkways, and remarkable people.
