Yangcun Swallow-Winged Enclosure

Introduction Yangcun Swallow-Winged Enclosure is situated in Longnan County, Jiangxi Province. Constructed during the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, it has a history of over 320 years and was built by Lai Fuzhuo of Yangcun. The enclosure stands 14.3 meters high, with walls 1.45 meters thick, and measures 41.5 meters in length and 31.8 meters in width. The outer walls are solid, sturdy, and stand straight like towering cliffs. The walls are dotted with musket holes, and four watchtowers at the cardinal directions—east, south, west, and north—work in unison to create a firepower network with no blind spots. To enter the enclosure, one must pass through the only gate, which is equipped with an outer iron door, a middle barrier gate, and an inner wooden door. Once the gate is closed, outsiders have no way in. The Swallow-Winged Enclosure features a scientifically designed layout, rigorous structure, and effective defensive mechanisms. In times of war, it functions as a fortress; in peacetime, with its artillery put away, it serves as a versatile residential building. It fully embodies the indomitable fighting spirit of the Hakka people in their struggle for living space and stands as a testament to their wisdom and strength. Transportation It is a 10-minute drive from the Longnan County Central Bus Station and can be reached by taxi.
