Dongting Geological Park

　　Dongting is situated on the banks of the Da Sui Fen River, 25 kilometers west of Dongning Town. The steep riverbanks have vertical drops of over 100 meters, with towering cliffs and steep rock faces. The river meanders through the landscape, surrounded by dense forests, with the crystal-clear Sui Fen River flowing at the foot of the mountains. According to investigations by provincial geological heritage experts, the landforms of Dongting originated as early as the Jurassic Period, approximately two hundred million years ago. They were formed through the effusion and overflow of intermediate-acidic volcanic magma, followed by later tectonic movements involving crustal uplift and subsidence. The site preserves a systematic and well-intact array of features, showcasing rich diversity and natural beauty. It exhibits a composite of geological relics including river canyons, fault structures, magma eruptions, and volcanic rocks. Such formations are rare and unique across the three northeastern provinces of China and hold extremely high scientific research value.
