Site of Martyrs' Sacrifice during the May 8th Uprising in Suiyang

In early 1946, to broaden the range of recovery work and establish new territories, in February 1946, the Party organization dispatched comrades Wei Shaowu, Yu Youmin (a member of the Communist Party of China), Wu Shulan (Wei Shaowu’s wife and also a CPC member), and others to Suiyang County to establish a people's government. The Suiyang County Democratic Government was subsequently formed. Due to insufficient core personnel at the time, apart from purging some enemy and puppet upper-level members, most of the original maintenance committee staff remained in their positions. Although the new government had been established, the issue of organizational impurity remained unresolved. When the Soviet Red Army stationed in Dongning withdrew back to the Soviet Union, two bands of bandits—one based in the city and the other in the mountains—who had already colluded internally and externally took the opportunity to intensify their activities. Eventually, on May 1, the Advance Column captured Dongning County town, on May 4 they took Suifenhe, and in the early hours of May 8, over 2,000 troops of the Advance Column surrounded Suiyang County town and launched an attack. Wei Shaowu and Wu Shulan led a portion of the guard soldiers to hold the southern building of the government (now the hospital) and returned fire. The battle lasted nearly two hours, during which Song Mingchang, one of Sun Battalion Commander’s “Eighteen Arhats” adjutants, was killed. However, due to the betrayal by traitor Lu Fengqi (deputy commander of the county security battalion) and being outnumbered with ammunition running out, they were eventually martyred. County Chief Wei Shaowu, Director of the County Women’s Federation Wu Shulan, her eldest son and the entire family of three, County Public Security Bureau Chief Yu Youmin, Head of the General Affairs Department Li Futang, Guard Squad Leader Zhang Zhigang, several guards, and public security officers sacrificed their lives in the battle. The county town was occupied, the newly established people's government was toppled, and the security battalion was disbanded. After occupying Suiyang, the Advance Column extensively hunted down those suspected of being communist sympathizers, arresting more than 50 people who were then sent to Dongning County town, where over 20 were killed.
The people of the Suiyang region deeply mourned the martyrs who bravely sacrificed their lives for the revolution. On June 14, the county democratic government built a grand and towering martyrs’ monument on the northern mountain peak. The newly appointed County Chief Li Duan personally inscribed the epitaph: “For the Nation They Perished, Their Names Live Forever!”
The heroic deeds of the martyrs will forever be engraved in history, and the memory of the martyrs will live on in the hearts of the people forever!
