Huangguoshu Waterfall is located on the Baishui River in Zhenning Buyei and Miao Autonomous County, Anshun, Guizhou. It is world-renowned for its vast network of interconnected waterfalls and is honored as the “No. 1 Waterfall in China.” It is also one of the grandest and most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The surging Baishui River plunges down from steep cliffs here, forming a cascade of nine drops with a total drop of 105.4 meters. Countless swirling eddies create a thunderous roar that can be heard for kilometers. The mist refracts sunlight to produce a dazzling array of rainbow hues, presenting an ever-changing and breathtaking spectacle. To facilitate viewing of the waterfall’s marvels, nearby there are observation pavilions such as the Waterfall Viewing Pavilion and the Water-Watching Pavilion, as well as steps and stone stairs leading directly down to the Rhinoceros Pool.

Huangguoshu Waterfall is the most majestic and magnificent movement of the Baishui River. It magically blends the river’s gentle murmuring flow with its exuberant leaps and bounds. Plummeting from the 68-meter-high cliff edge is the passion of an entire river—simultaneously grand and dynamic, abundant in volume and rich in spirit, yet also delicate, graceful, and charmingly tender. With an 81-meter-wide curtain of water, mist wafts through the air, and when illuminated by the right sunlight, a mesmerizing rainbow may form.

Walking along the rocky path, the Water-Curtain Cave suddenly comes into view, making it possible to explore through the heart of the waterfall. Though not as spacious or fantastical as the Water-Curtain Cave of the Journey to the West’s Flower-Fruit Mountain, squeezing through the crevices between rocks, being drenched by the lively droplets of water, and scaling the rugged, winding path instills a sense of boldness and joy.

At the base of the waterfall lies the unfathomable Rhinoceros Pool. Walking downstream from the bottom, the crystal-clear waters exert an irresistible allure. If you don’t scoop up a handful of this fresh water to wash away the dust of your journey at this point, the regret may linger for a lifetime.
