Kumtag Desert

Kumtag Desert
Introduction        Kumtag means "sand mountain" in Uyghur. The formation of the Kumtag Desert is mainly due to the fierce winds from the Qijiaojing Pass of the Tianshan Mountains and the Dabancheng Pass. These winds travel long distances while carrying large amounts of sand, eventually converging and depositing in the Kumtag region, creating this unique landscape of a "desert with sand mountains."

The Kumtag Desert has been developed into a scenic area that combines scientific research, exploration, adventure, desert sports, sand therapy health treatments, and desert sightseeing. Standing in the old city of Shanshan and looking southward, the golden desert is majestic and spectacular, offering boundless scenery. For thousands of years, it has stood in close companionship with the oasis, silently gazing at each other like devoted lovers, inspiring endless reverie.
