Amman Roman Theater

The Roman Theater is situated at the foot of Amman’s Citadel Hill in the old city district. Constructed in the 2nd century AD, the entire building lies against the hillside, and its design is very similar to that of the Roman Theater in Jerash, Jordan. The theater is circular in shape and could accommodate up to 6,000 people. The builders made full use of acoustic principles during its construction—no matter where you sit in the theater, the sounds of singing, recitation, or speeches from the stage can be heard clearly. If you stand in the center of the theater and speak, you can hear your own voice echoing back from above. Nearby, there is also a “Folklore Museum” and a “Museum of Popular Traditions.” Today, the theater serves not only as one of Amman’s major tourist attractions but also as an important venue for cultural and artistic events.
