Persimmons are a symbol of good fortune and happiness. Their round shape represents reunion and completeness, while their orange-red hue signifies prosperity. The Chinese word for persimmon, “柿” (shì), sounds like phrases such as “万事如意” (wàn shì rú yì, meaning “may everything go as you wish”) and “世代吉祥” (shì dài jí xiáng, meaning “generational good fortune”). Among persimmon varieties, the Mopan Persimmon stands out for its large size, beautiful shape, smooth texture, and vibrant color. It is one of the finest astringent persimmon varieties in the world. The Pan Mountain region has a long history of cultivating this fruit, yielding persimmons of exceptional quality. Each 100 grams of persimmon contains 0.7 grams of protein, 0.1 grams of fat, 11 grams of sugar, and provides 48 kilocalories of energy. Additionally, persimmons are rich in minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron, as well as various vitamins. However, overconsumption or improper eating of persimmons can lead to the formation of gastric “persimmon stones,” as persimmons contain high levels of pectin and tannins, especially concentrated in the pulp and seeds.
