Soy products contain a variety of essential trace elements and rich calcium, offering high nutritional value and are quite popular among the public. Dongmafang Village in Baigutun Town is well-known for its soy product processing, and among them, Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips stand out for their long history, meticulous craftsmanship, unique ingredients, vibrant yet not overly bright color, firm yet not hard texture, and thin yet elastic consistency, making them highly favored by consumers in the Beijing-Tianjin market. Recently, reporters visited Tianjin Kaiyao Technology Development Co., Ltd., a leading soy product enterprise in the village, for an interview.

When it comes to the famous Wuqing snack of dried tofu strips, the well-known one is Chengguan Dried Tofu Strips. However, according to research, it is actually produced in Dongmafang Village, Baigutun Town. The reason it is called Chengguan Dried Tofu Strips stems from the following story: Chengguan Dried Tofu Strips originated as early as the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, and have a history of over 150 years. They were first made by Liuji Dried Tofu Strip Workshop in Dongmafang. Because they were sold at the Chengguan Market year-round, people came to collectively refer to them as “Chengguan Dried Tofu Strips.” There is also another version that says the origin of Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips is closely linked to Emperor Kangxi. In March of the 53rd year of Kangxi’s reign (1714), accompanied by the Grand Canal Superintendent, Emperor Kangxi visited Wuqing for the sixth time to inspect the embankment project of the North Canal. During his trip, he passed by Qiuguzhuang in the eastern suburbs of Wuqing Chengguan. Remembering his former minister Li Wei, who had retired and settled in the village, the emperor ordered his summoning. By dinner time, Li Wei served Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips. After tasting them, the emperor praised the strips as having a flavor that “surpassed those in the capital.” Since then, Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips became a tribute item. This means that Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips existed as early as the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is now probably impossible to verify which of the above accounts is more accurate. Over the years, Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips have become a distinctive dish on people’s tables due to their refined craftsmanship and rich flavor, winning widespread affection. In 1979, when Wuqing organized a delegation to attend the opening ceremony of Tianjin Food Street, Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips were exhibited as part of the delegation, with a master demonstrating the slicing technique on-site. Customers, not knowing what it was, gathered around to watch. After being introduced, they learned it was the famous Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips, and after tasting, they were full of praise. According to statistics, over 5,000 kilograms of Dongmafang Dried Tofu Strips were sold during the opening ceremony of the food street.
