Water bamboo is a perennial rhizomatous marshy herbaceous plant native to China and is one of the important aquatic vegetables. It is known as the "ginseng of water" due to its rich nutritional value. Liantang water bamboo is a pollution-free and harmless vegetable that contains abundant vitamins effective in relieving alcohol intoxication, making it useful for sobering up. The organic nitrogen in tender water bamboo exists in the form of amino acids and also provides sulfur elements. It has a delicious taste, high nutritional value, and is easily absorbed by the human body. The cultivation of Liantang water bamboo has a history of over a hundred years. Since the 1960s, relying on the region’s unique geographical environment and continuous advancements in science and technology, it has gradually become the pillar agricultural industry of Liantang Town. Today, the town has reached a planting scale of 30,000 mu per season and an annual output of 80,000 tons, making it the largest and highest-yielding water bamboo-producing township in East China. As a result, it has earned the reputation of being the "No. 1 Water Bamboo Town in East China." In 2008, "Liantang Water Bamboo" was awarded the title of National Protected Geographical Indication Product.

The protected geographical indication area for Liantang water bamboo is defined according to the scope proposed in the Letter on Delimiting the Protected Geographical Indication Area for Liantang Water Bamboo (Qingfu Letter [2008] No. 10) issued by the People's Government of Qingpu District, Shanghai.
