Hezhou Snail Stew
Hezhou Snail Stew: The snails used are sourced from rural rice paddies and ponds. It takes about ten minutes or more to stew them to perfection. The dish boasts a unique, delicious aroma and an appealing presentation. The taste is rich, tender, fragrant, and smooth—truly distinctive. Snails are known for their nourishing effects on the kidneys and yin. There’s a Cantonese-sounding phrase “想螺就螺” (pronounced similarly to “want snail, get snail”) that has become a popular catchphrase.
Benefits: Snail meat is rich in vitamin A, protein, iron, and calcium, and has therapeutic effects for conditions such as red eyes, jaundice, beriberi, and hemorrhoids. Eating snails can also significantly help with body odor. 1. Suitable for those with jaundice, edema, difficulty urinating, hemorrhoids with bloody stools, beriberi, diabetes, wind-heat eye inflammation and swelling, and those who have consumed alcohol; also suitable for people with diabetes, cancer, Sjögren's syndrome, obesity, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, arteriosclerosis, and fatty liver. 2. Not suitable for those with weak spleen and stomach, loose stools, or diarrhea; because snails are very cold in nature, they should be avoided during colds, menstruation, postpartum periods, and by those with a history of cold stomach issues.
Tips: Snail meat should not be taken with traditional Chinese medicine like Gecko (Ge Jie) or Western medicine like oxytetracycline; it is also not advisable to eat with beef, mutton, fava beans, pork, clams, wheat flour, corn, winter melon, muskmelon, wood ear mushrooms, or sugary foods. Drinking ice water while eating snails may cause diarrhea.
