It is known as “Tribute Rice.” When speaking of Wuchang, one must mention that its most famous product is rice. Located in the southernmost part of Heilongjiang Province, about 120 kilometers from Harbin, Wuchang is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Harbin City. Originally named Huanxiling, during the fourth year of the Xianfeng reign in the Qing Dynasty, five social units were established, namely “Juren (Benevolence), Youyi (Righteousness), Chongli (Propriety), Shangzhi (Wisdom), and Chengxin (Integrity),” symbolizing the Confucian values of the “Three Cardinal Guides and the Five Constant Virtues,” which gave the place its name — Wuchang. The name carries classical elegance while reflecting the city’s cultural refinement. Truly a blend of tradition and modernity with unique charm, the city covers an area of 7,512 square kilometers and is one of the largest county-level cities in China with over a million mu of rice paddies. International experts have noted that Wuchang’s rice ranks first among those grown at similar latitudes.
Distribution
Wuchang City is located in the southern part of Heilongjiang Province and has a mid-temperate continental climate, with a frost-free period of 140 days, an average annual rainfall of 608 millimeters, and 2,629 hours of sunshine per year. The Xilang River, Lalin River, and Mangniu River flow through the region, creating an extensive water system. Abundant sunlight, irrigation from natural rivers, and the cultivation of high-quality late-maturing rice varieties give Wuchang Rice its distinctive qualities. Wuchang Daoxiang Rice
Wuchang boasts picturesque scenery and is also a land of fish and rice. The loud market calls of “authentic Wuchang Rice” highlight its national fame. “Thai fragrant rice comes from Fushui, Chinese fragrant rice comes from Wuchang.” Wuchang is a typical agricultural hub (city), serving as a key national commodity grain base. It is among the top ten advanced grain-producing counties in China and one of the top five rice-producing counties. Rice fields in Wuchang account for one-tenth of the province’s total and one-quarter of Harbin’s. The city is world-renowned for its rice production and is hailed as the “Rice Kingdom” at the foot of the Zhangguangcai Mountains. Wuchang Rice is of premium quality — its grains are uniform, glossy, richly aromatic, and have a mellow, long-lasting flavor. This delicious taste comes from being irrigated with mountain spring water, grown in fertile basin soil, and cultivated using superior varieties and advanced techniques.
Features
Influenced by the region’s unique geography and climate, Wuchang Rice accumulates more dry matter and has a moderate content of amylose and higher levels of amylopectin. Due to the large diurnal temperature variation during the rice ripening period, the rice accumulates more readily soluble double-chain sugars, which are very beneficial to human health. When cooked, Wuchang Rice has a light, slightly sweet taste, is soft and slightly sticky, aromatic and refreshing, with glossy, oily grains. Leftover rice does not harden upon reheating, making it a top choice for family meals. Wuchang Rice features plump, firm grains with a clean, translucent white color; its polished grains are glossy and richly fragrant, making it an excellent choice for daily meals. Wuchang is a renowned rice-producing region in China. Its favorable natural environment, long planting history, and advanced production technology have contributed to the high quality of Wuchang Rice. To fully leverage the brand strength of Wuchang Rice, it became the first certified trademark in Heilongjiang Province. To prevent counterfeit “Wuchang Rice” by unscrupulous vendors, the Wuchang Rice Association, under the guidance of the Harbin Administration for Industry and Commerce, applied to the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce in 1997 to register a certification trademark that protects the geographical origin name. The application was accepted in 2000 and officially approved on July 21 of this year. According to reports, based on the product’s quality characteristics, the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce clearly defined the production area where the “Wuchang Rice” certification trademark can be used: from the Xilang River and Lalin River basins to the east of Xichengzi Village in Hongqi Township, west of Weisha River, north of Mopanshan, and south of Shuohuadashan. This area covers 1.5 million mu of Wuchang’s rice production region. It is understood that the China Famous Brand Products evaluation is jointly organized by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the China Famous Brand Strategy Promotion Committee, and is the most authoritative brand evaluation body in China. In 2001, Wuchang began integrating rice resources and brands. All rice produced within the designated production area is marketed under the single brand “Wuchang Rice.” Depending on the variety, it is registered under four product names: “Wuchang Rice,” “Wuchang Fragrant Rice,” “Wuchang Glutinous Rice,” and “Wuchang Black Rice.” At the same time, standardized management was implemented across the city’s rice industry, resulting in significant social and economic benefits for “Wuchang Rice.” In 2003, the commercial output of Wuchang Rice exceeded 400 million kilograms.

Good Water and Soil Make Good Rice
Located 120 kilometers south of Harbin, Wuchang sits in a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides and open on the other. With beautiful scenery and fresh air — especially during August and September when the rice grains fill and mature, under sunny, mild weather with abundant sunlight, hot days and cool nights, and large diurnal temperature variations — the rice maturation period is highly concentrated. Locals call this “rapid ripening.” Wuchang rice accumulates more dry matter, making it highly nutritious with a unique flavor. As a result, Wuchang is hailed as the “Rice Kingdom” at the foot of the Zhangguangcai Mountains, and its rice has long enjoyed a strong reputation in the domestic market.
Health Benefits of Wuchang Rice
Although the nutrient content in rice is not particularly high, due to the large quantities consumed, it serves as a fundamental food for replenishing nutrients. Rice porridge can invigorate the spleen, harmonize the stomach, and clear the lungs. Rice broth helps to boost qi, nourish yin, and moisturize dryness. With its sweet and mild nature, it benefits infant development and health, stimulates gastric juice secretion to aid digestion, enhances fat absorption, and helps casein in milk powder form loose, soft curds for easier digestion and absorption. Therefore, using rice broth to mix formula or as complementary food for babies is ideal. Traditional Chinese medicine believes rice has a sweet and mild nature, with benefits such as tonifying the middle energizer, benefiting qi, strengthening the spleen and stomach, enriching essence and improving vitality, harmonizing the five organs, activating blood circulation, improving hearing and vision, relieving irritability, quenching thirst, and easing diarrhea. It is believed that eating more rice can lead to “a stronger body and better complexion.”
