Mountain Chestnuts
Mountain Chestnuts
Mountain chestnuts, also known as hazelnuts, pointed chestnuts, or cudgels, belong to the genus Corylus of the birch family (Corylaceae). There are about 20 species of Corylus worldwide, distributed across Asia, Europe, and North America. In China, there are 8 species and 2 varieties, found in the northeast, north China, northwest, and southwest regions. Mountain chestnuts are an excellent tree species that provide both fruit and timber. Their fruit resembles chestnuts, with a hard shell, plump and round white kernels that are fragrant and rich in oil, offering a particularly delicious taste with a lingering aftertaste. As a result, they have become one of the most popular types of nuts, earning the title "King of Nuts" and ranking alongside almonds, walnuts, and cashews as one of the "Four Major Nuts."
Mountain chestnuts are highly nutritious. In addition to containing protein, fat, and carbohydrates, their kernels are also rich in carotene, vitamin B1
, vitamin B2, and vitamin E. They contain all eight essential amino acids required by the human body, with levels far exceeding those found in walnuts. Mountain chestnuts also have higher levels of trace elements such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron compared to other nuts. Furthermore, they can be used to produce very valuable timber, which is hard and has beautiful grain and color, making it suitable for fine woodworking. Some varieties can also serve as plants for vegetation restoration and landscaping.
Mountain chestnuts are rich in special components such as oils (mostly unsaturated fatty acids), proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins (vitamin E), minerals, sugar fibers, β-sitosterol, and antioxidants like phenol, as well as the eight essential amino acids and trace elements required by humans. Therefore, they possess the following characteristics:
1. Mountain chestnuts are naturally rich in oils (mostly unsaturated fatty acids), with oil content reaching 60.5%. This makes the fat-soluble vitamins they contain more easily absorbed by the human body, providing excellent nourishment for those who are physically weak, recovering from illness, or prone to hunger.
2. With a vitamin E content as high as 36%, they can effectively delay aging, prevent arteriosclerosis, and moisturize the skin.
3. Mountain chestnuts contain the anti-cancer chemical compound paclitaxel, which can treat ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and other types of cancers, and may extend the life expectancy of patients.
4. Mountain chestnuts have a natural fragrance that stimulates the appetite, and their rich fiber content aids digestion and helps prevent constipation.
5. Mountain chestnuts also help lower cholesterol, reducing the harm caused by saturated fatty acids in meat and effectively preventing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
6. The content of trace elements such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium in mountain chestnuts is very high, and long-term consumption can help regulate blood pressure.
7. People who work in front of computers every day can benefit from eating more mountain chestnuts, as they provide certain eye health benefits.
