  Luobei Red Adzuki Beans

Luobei Red Adzuki Beans have been registered and protected under the National Agricultural Product Geographical Indication system. This makes them the third product from Luobei County to receive such protection, following Luobei Rice and Luobei Black Fungus. The designated geographical protection area for Luobei Red Adzuki Beans includes eight towns and one forestry bureau under the jurisdiction of Luobei County: Tuanjie Town, Mingshan Town, Zhaoxing Town, Fengxiang Town, Habei Town, Yunshan Town, Dongming Township, Taipinggou Township, and Habei Forestry Bureau.

Red adzuki beans, also known as chi dou, chi xiao dou, hong chi dou, or simply xiao dou, are referred to in English as Red Adzuki Beans. Rich in starch, they are often called "rice beans." These beans are packed with nutrients — per 100 grams, they contain 21.7 grams of protein, 0.8 grams of fat, 60.7 grams of carbohydrates, 76 mg of calcium, 386 mg of phosphorus, 4.5 mg of iron, 0.43 mg of thiamine, 0.16 mg of riboflavin, and 2.1 mg of niacin. The beans are harvested when mature but not yet cracked, then the entire plant is dried, threshed, and the seeds are cleaned and dried again. With a relatively high content of lysine in their protein, red adzuki beans pair well with grains and are commonly eaten as bean rice or bean porridge, or used to make red bean paste or baked goods. Li Shizhen referred to red adzuki beans as the "grain of the heart," noting their benefits for "promoting body fluids, facilitating urination, reducing bloating and swelling, relieving vomiting," and treating "diarrhea, alleviating alcohol toxicity, easing cold and heat pain and swelling, discharging pus and dispersing blood, and promoting lactation."
