“Liuhe Mountain Grapes” are a specialty of Liuhe County in Jilin Province. They are high-quality wine-making grapes and the primary raw material used in the county’s wine production. Liuhe County is located in the southeastern part of Jilin Province and is a semi-mountainous region with fertile soil, commonly referred to as black calcareous soil, which is very conducive to the growth of mountain grapes with short growing cycles. The Liuhe Mountain Grapes feature long conical clusters and small berries, averaging 1.38g per berry. They have intense coloration, high pigment content, thick bloom, and appear deep purple or blue-black in color. Their juice is gem-red in hue, with a pleasant sweet-and-sour taste and a rich, distinctive fragrance unique to mountain grapes. These grapes are a natural, pollution-free, and green food product. On December 31, 2009, Liuhe Mountain Grapes were granted national protected geographical indication status.

The large-scale cultivation of Liuhe Mountain Grapes dates back to the late 1970s. From the initial trial of the “Gongniang No. 1” variety to planned development, and from the introduction and large-scale cultivation of the “Shuangyou” variety, by the end of 2007, the county’s mountain grape planting base had expanded to 15,000 mu. Grape growers enjoyed steady and growing profits, and the industry showed strong momentum. In 2005, Liuhe was recognized as a “National Standardized Demonstration Zone for Mountain Grape Production.” Liuhe is one of the main production areas for high-quality mountain grapes in China. Thanks to its premium grape resources, the county’s wine-making industry has flourished. By 2008, there were 44 QS-certified mountain grape wine producers in the county, operating 98 production lines with an annual production capacity of 150,000 kiloliters. In 2006, the county was honored as the “Home of High-Quality Mountain Grape Wine in China.”
