"Fritillaria ussuriensis from Dachuan," a variety of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, is a representative brand among the authentic medicinal products of Tonghua County in Jilin Province. It is a National Geographical Indication Product of China. In 2006, it was recognized by the People’s Government of Jilin Province as a "Famous Agricultural Product of Jilin." Testing by relevant Chinese national authorities has shown that all of its indicators meet the requirements of the Ministry of Foreign Trade's "Green Industry Standard for the Import and Export of Medicinal Plants and Preparations" (WMZ-2001), and its hygiene indicators comply with the standards set forth in the "Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China." With its unique regional characteristics and growing reputation, the product is now sold to over 20 provinces and regions including Guangzhou, Henan, Hebei, Anhui, and Zhejiang.

  Growing Environment

Fritillaria ussuriensis is a valuable medicinal plant native to Northeast China. Due to its relatively narrow distribution, it is found mainly in temperate mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, often growing under Korean pine mixed forests. As an early spring plant, it has small bulbs, few fibrous roots, and weak fertilizer absorption capacity. Its above-ground growth period lasts only about 55–60 days, making it suitable for growing in areas with ample water, nutrients, and rich humus. It thrives in cool and moist climates. Tonghua County, known as the "Hometown of Fritillaria ussuriensis," has a long history of cultivating this plant. Located in the southeastern part of Jilin Province, Tonghua lies along the middle reaches of the Hun River in the Changbai Mountain region. The area is characterized by the landscape saying "eight parts mountain, half part water, and half part field." Its unique geographical environment, landform features, abundant water sources, and deep, loose, moist soil rich in humus have nurtured "Fritillaria ussuriensis from Dachuan," a high-quality authentic medicinal herb with distinctive local characteristics. In 1962, the National Fritillaria ussuriensis Production Experience Exchange Conference was held in Tonghua County; in 1998, Dachuan Township was honored as the "Hometown of Fritillaria ussuriensis" by the People’s Government of Jilin Province; in 2005, the Fritillaria ussuriensis production area of Dachuan was listed as one of China’s fifth batch of agricultural standardization demonstration zones; and in 2008, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China officially issued a notice approving the geographical indication product protection for Fritillaria ussuriensis from Dachuan, Tonghua County.

  Protected Area

The protected area for the geographical indication product Fritillaria ussuriensis from Dachuan is based on the scope proposed in the Notice on Determining the Protected Area for the Geographical Indication of Fritillaria ussuriensis from Dachuan (Tongzhengbanfa [2005] No. 37) issued by the General Office of the People’s Government of Tonghua County, Jilin Province. This includes the entire administrative region governed by Tonghua County, Jilin Province. [5
